Emma’s contribution will target Work Packages 5 and 6

By Nuno Elias & Emma Simpson

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Emma Simpson to the Accelerator Division team at ESS, effective October 2025, where she will contribute to the Innovate for Sustainable Accelerating Systems (iSAS) program.

Emma will be working with a focus towards implementing sustainable improvements to cryomodule design within the iSAS framework. This work will include benchmarking of the current ESS cryomodules within a global context and identifying and developing improvements to current cryomodule design from sustainability and energy reduction perspectives. Integration of improved iSAS systems will be validated and tested using a test cryomodule at ESS.

Emma Simpson completed her Ph.D degree at Imperial College London in the UK within the area of Ultrafast Science before undertaking Postdoctoral work within the Atomic Physics division at LTH, Lund University, Sweden. With an experimental background in optics, spectroscopy and high peak power laser systems, Emma has familiarity with accelerators through experimental campaigns at the free electron lasers FERMI in Italy and LCLS in the USA. Emma will bring a fresh perspective and practical experimental knowledge to tackle the unique challenges involved within this iSAS project.
